Recent Hadley Circulation Strengthening: A Trend or Multidecadal Variability?

چکیده
Abstract This study explores the possible drivers of recent Hadley circulation strengthening in modern reanalyses. Predominantly, two generations reanalyses provided by European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts are used: fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5) and interim (ERA-Interim). Some results also evaluated against other long-term To assess origins cell (HC) strength variability, we employ Kuo–Eliassen (KE) equation. ERA5 shows that both HCs were prior to 2000s, but they have been weakening or remained steady afterward. Most variability is explained meridional gradient diabatic (latent) heating, which related precipitation gradients. However, larger than expected from observed zonal-mean [estimated Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP)]. suggests HC trends decades can be partly as an artifact misrepresentation latent heating through (physical) variability. show latter true, analyze preliminary data 1950–78 period, (e.g., twentieth century) reanalyses, sea surface temperature observational data. reveals changes a consequence Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) frictional processes, turn drive global work has implications further understanding circulation.

Recent multidecadal strengthening of the Walker circulation across the tropical Pacific
The Pacific Walker circulation is a large overturning cell that spans the tropical Pacific Ocean, characterized by rising motion (lower sea-level pressure) over Indonesia and sinking motion (higher sea level-pressure) over the eastern Pacific1,2. Fluctuations in the Walker circulation reflect changes in the location and strength of tropical heating, so related circulation anomalies have global ...
متن کاملSensitivity of thermohaline circulation to decadal and multidecadal variability
In this paper, stochastic freshwater inputs with different variabilities are introduced into an Earth Model of Intermediate Complexity to study their effect on the behaviour of the thermohaline circulation (THC). The variability in the stochastic signal was set to be either decadal or multidecadal (70 years), based on intensity modulation of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. T...

[1] The variability of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) simulated in a multimillenial control integration of the Kiel ClimateModel (KCM) displays enhanced variability relative to the red background at decadal and centennial timescales. The multidecadal variability is the model’s version of the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV), often referred to as Atlantic Multidecadal Oscill...
متن کاملBarents Sea multidecadal variability
[1] We present area-averaged time series of temperature for the 100–150 m depth layer of the Barents Sea from 1900 through 2006. This record is dominated by multidecadal variability on the order of 4 C which is correlated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation Index. Citation: Levitus, S., G. Matishov, D. Seidov, and I.
